At AdunGreen, we’re passionate about food security because we know it’s the bedrock of a sustainable future. Building on the success of our Train the Trainer program, we returned to Government Girls Day Secondary School (GGDSS) Okesuna, Ilorin with the 3MYF Initiative to empower students with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in grow bag farming, on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
This innovative method allows anyone to grow food in small spaces using everyday materials, transforming what might seem impossible into reality.There’s a persistent myth that agriculture demands vast tracts of land, but we are here to debunk that! Our students discovered that they can cultivate mini-farms right at home — whether on their balconies, in their backyards, or within their school’s grounds.
By repurposing old sacks, buckets, and various containers, they are now equipped to grow fresh vegetables and other crops that can nourish their families and bolster their communities.
Our lead trainer, Mr. Tajudeen Olaribigbe drove home an essential point: The future hinges on three key forces—Agriculture, AgriTech, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). As technology evolves at lightning speed, agriculture remains the vital backbone of human survival. If we lost our phones, internet, or digital capabilities, we could adapt, but without food, survival becomes impossible.
This is why agriculture not only holds a promise but also offers a secure and bright future that surpasses any other industry.We also shared an eye-opening insight: numerous successful individuals, including those who fulfill monumental life aspirations, have achieved prosperity through farming. Farming goes beyond mere food production; it’s a pathway to financial independence and a critical component of national development.After diving into theory and motivation, we rolled up our sleeves and took students into the field for hands-on demonstrations.
Watching their eyes light up as they got their hands dirty was inspiring! We showed them just how easy it is to start growing their own crops right away. With the right skills and a determined mindset, these young aspiring farmers can turn agriculture into a thriving venture—starting now, at this pivotal stage of their lives. To effectively promote agriculture education in schools, we must engage students through innovative and hands-on approaches.
Many students initially thought agriculture was limited to just planting crops, but we opened their eyes to the vast array of career opportunities in the sector—agribusiness, food technology, environmental sustainability, and more. With the world increasingly focusing on sustainable practices, agriculture stands at the forefront of climate action, food innovation, and economic growth. By incorporating interactive workshops, field trips to local farms, and partnerships with agricultural organizations, we can create immersive experiences that demonstrate the relevance of agriculture in today’s society.Students left the session energized, understanding that they don’t have to wait for the future to make a difference. The time to act is now.
By applying what they learned immediately, students can actively participate in fostering food security and promoting environmental sustainability. We can also leverage technology, such as virtual farming simulations or agricultural apps, to make learning engaging. Inviting guest speakers from diverse agricultural fields to share their journey will inspire students, giving them real-world insight into a range of opportunities.Establishing student-led agriculture clubs can further build a sense of community and ownership. These clubs could organize local food drives, student-run gardens, or sustainability initiatives, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge in practical settings.Moreover, integrating agriculture concepts across subjects – emphasizing its ties to science, math, and social studies – can enhance interdisciplinary learning, making the content more relatable.
