Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq led the charge in honoring Nigeria’s fallen heroes during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held on Wednesday, January 15, at the Cenotaph of the Unknown Soldier in Ilorin. This solemn occasion marked the conclusion of weeks-long nationwide activities commemorating the sacrifices of the Nigerian Armed Forces.In a symbolic gesture of peace and harmony, the Governor released white pigeons, symbolizing Nigeria’s resilience and unity following a 30-month civil war that claimed countless lives.Governor AbdulRazaq was joined by an array of dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi, security commanders, war veterans, community leaders, academics, members of the Nigerian Legion, and the families of fallen heroes.Speaking to reporters after visiting a state-funded medical pavilion for veterans, the Governor emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices of Nigeria’s military personnel and supporting their families.“The significance of today is that we must never forget those that held us together. We must not forget their families. We should continue to pray for Nigeria to have peace, harmony, and improved security,” AbdulRazaq said.The ceremony featured the laying of wreaths by key officials, including Deputy Governor Alabi; State Chief Judge Justice Abiodun Adebara; heads of security agencies; and representatives of the Emir of Ilorin, the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, and other prominent figures.Mrs. Tiamiyu Fatimo, a widow of one of the fallen heroes, was also present, representing the families of the departed. The event underscored the state’s commitment to the welfare of veterans and their families, with retired Brigadier General Abdulkadir Anigiobi, Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Kwara State branch, praising the Governor’s efforts.Governor AbdulRazaq’s call for unity and prayers resonated as a reminder of the Armed Forces’ enduring role in safeguarding Nigeria’s peace and sovereignty.This year’s remembrance serves as a poignant reflection of the sacrifices made by the military and the shared responsibility of all citizens to work toward a secure and harmonious Nigeria.
