In a significant stride towards addressing the growing menace of drug abuse among young people, the Kwara State Government has launched a two-day capacity-building training for public secondary school teachers across the state.
This initiative, aimed at prevention, treatment, and care, is being spearheaded by the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Drug Abuse Prevention and Control, with robust support from the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The training, which commenced today, is part of the government’s strategic efforts to curb drug abuse by empowering educators with the knowledge and skills needed to identify and address drug-related issues among students.
Teachers, as frontline mentors, are being equipped to become proactive agents in drug prevention and in creating a supportive environment for students who may be at risk.
In his address, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Drug Abuse Prevention and Control emphasized the critical role teachers play in shaping young minds and the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling the root causes of drug abuse. “This training will enable our teachers to detect early warning signs, provide necessary interventions, and guide students toward making better life choices,” he noted.
Representatives from UNODC and NDLEA also lauded the initiative, highlighting its alignment with global and national efforts to combat substance abuse. “Education is a powerful tool in the fight against drug abuse, and empowering teachers ensures a ripple effect that will positively impact countless young lives,” remarked a UNODC delegate.
The training program features sessions on understanding the psychological and social factors contributing to drug abuse, intervention strategies, and fostering a drug-free school environment.
